More Snow Days! Less Good?

CHS canceling school may be nice right now, but AP exams are dangerously close and snow days could be disastrous in the long run. With all of the snow that has come to Charlottesville recently, I’ll be looking into how this snow will affect AP test-takers, along with finals and the end of the school year.

While there are many pros to snow days as a break from the repetitiveness of school( especially with it being online)there are also many cons/ For example, Monique Scott said that they enjoy having a break from school, but also that there is “tons of makeup work to do so sometimes it just feels like schools again.” Many other students feel the same way. In a survey, when asked, “What will stress you out due to missing more and more class?” many responded and said homework.

With AP exams just around the corner in May, and the scheduled end of the semester soon after in June, there’s a lot of pressure on students and teachers to get through their coursework after missing many classes. While the schedule of AP exams will most likely not change, it’s very possible that the end of the school year will be pushed back because of the snow days in the past few weeks. Regardless of the future possibility of snow days, many students will be underprepared for finals and AP exams.

Since CHS has been fully virtual for the entire school year so far, there’s also reason to question whether or not there should even be snow days. As the only huge reason to cancel school would be the rare occurrence of a large power outage. While continuing school even when there would normally be snow days would solve the problem of preparing students for AP exams and finals, there would of course be a large backlash of students, parents, and possibly teachers even too. Also due to the fact that Charlottesville did not have much snowfall last year, it seems only fair that students get their snow days this year instead.

All in all, both the students and teachers of CHS need to stay on top of their work as best as possible, to be able to take and pass their exams and finals in the spring. Hopefully the snow will start to fizzle out as it gets warmer, allowing students to continually stay in class without disruption, to prepare for AP exams, finals, and the end of the semester and school year.
