SPOTLIGHT: The Life of a C.A.T.E.C. Student

Marina Reilly, News Editor

“First call for the afternoon C.A.T.E.C. bus!” We all hear this vague, monotonous announcement every day, but who actually gets on the C.A.T.E.C. bus? Who are these people, what do they do during their time away from C.H.S.? Well, I decided that I was going to find out. I reached out to senior Isaac Kenner, and got the inside scoop about all things C.A.T.E.C.

Interview with Isaac Kenner (senior)

Q: Why did you decide to do C.A.T.E.C.?

I chose to do C.A.T.E.C. because I wanted to learn how to build different things like installing a toilet and other useful stuff you should know. Someday, I’d like to build my own house.

Q: What, specifically, do you do every day?

Right now we are working on a shed for somebody and we are going to sell it. We’ve built a ton of dog houses and we donate those. My teacher also gave me the opportunity to work on something of my own choice, so I chose to make a fly fishing net.

Q: What’s your teacher’s name?

Mr. Tremer, we call him Sib.

Q: What does C.A.T.E.C. stand for?

Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center

Q: What else does C.A.T.E.C. have to offer?

We have what I take which is Building Trade and Electricity. We also offer Veterinary courses, firefighting, and yeaaa that’s about all I know.

On top of what Isaac described, C.A.T.E.C. has nine major course sections that break down to different individual classes. Those sections include: Career and Technical Education (CTE), English, Fine and Performing Arts, Health, PE, and Drivers Ed, History and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Science, Special Education, and World Languages.

Q: How do you think C.A.T.E.C. will help you in the future?

Someday I want to build my own house so I think this course will help me. Also when a light bulb goes out, I can change the light bulb, because I know how to do that. I won’t have to call a contractor or an electrician to come fix things. Because I AM the contractor I know how to do that, so.

Q: Do you regret taking C.A.T.E.C. or do you love it?

No, I love it. Represent!
