The Charlottesville High School varsity volleyball team has reigned as one of the most successful and united sport teams in its many decades at this school. The volleyball team consists of a group of strong and dedicated individuals who work together to beat their opponents. The Varsity team has many valuable players, including long-time CHS players and freshmen alike. Their strategies, game plans, and relationships on and off the court are what make them so successful in what they do.
Mira Amato, a junior at Charlottesville High School who has been playing volleyball here for the past three years, comments that “This season has been a big adjustment from last year because we lost a lot of seniors and have a very young team. However, this is also exciting because all of these girls care about each other and support each other and are learning to work together as a team.”

Even though varsity volleyball has a large number of younger players this season, they have been able to quickly adapt to this challenge and turn it into a strength instead. Virginia Maier, one of the freshmen on the team, is the top leader of kills at both practices and games. “Kills” in volleyball are attacks that cannot be opposed by the other team, resulting in a direct point. Mira says that, “I’m so incredibly astonished with how much of a developed player [Virginia] is when this is her first year playing with us.” Facing opponent schools with mostly junior and senior aged-players may be difficult, but what CHS lacks in age they bring in talent. Mira says that, “I’m so excited to see what the future of CHS volleyball will look like because I really think we have a bright future with these girls.”
Along with their fresh talent this year, The varsity volleyball team has had a strong season this fall thanks to its coaches, Casey and Bobko. Mira Amato states that one of the things she has loved most about playing at CHS is how supported she feels. “I have loved having coaches who support and believe in us. This program has gone through tough periods and to be able to have coaches that genuinely want us to do better and believe in the potential of the program is something that I’m so grateful to have. Both Casey and Bobko have been playing for a while and together they make such a great team because they balance working us to be disciplined and being caring and supportive when we need it.” The coaches are a big part of what makes the players feel motivated and successful at their sport. They are the driving force behind the type of attitude the girls have towards their games and each other.
The 2025 season has proved to be one of the most difficult for the CHS Varsity Volleyball team. But our players have managed to pull through three wins as one of the youngest teams on the court competing against other schools that are packed with seventeen- and eighteen-year-olds. One of the main reasons for this success is the communication and bonds that go on behind the scenes. Sophia Beasley, a sophomore on the team, says “The community is very supportive and uplifting, as the whole sport is based around our connection with each other.” She says that although the season is difficult and the games have been tough, the players have always been able to find their rhythm on the court together, because they “communicate by talking and uplifting each other after good or bad plays.”

Charlottesville High School’s varsity volleyball team has had a very successful 2025 season. They are a very young team that has an incredibly bright future ahead of them. Although they have faced many hurdles and challenging opponents, they have persevered because of their connections and communication with each other.
