What if I told you that the answer to a healthier, happier, and more productive life could be found by simply closing your eyes?
Sleep is very important, especially for teenagers. The Baylor College of Medicine states that sleep allows our brain to consolidate memories and process information. Sleep helps us stay focused and regulates our mood. Especially as a student, sleep supports academic success and manages stress.
KTR asked students about their sleep habits and how it affects their everyday life. Here are their responses:
Sophomore Maddie Irani said, “I get around 8 hours of sleep a day during the school year.” When asked if she thought sleep impacted her social and academic life she responded, “Yes for both. You can’t really be social and get work done when you’re sleep deprived and tired.”
Junior Tilda Rajagopalan said, “I get around 30 to 40 hours of sleep during a school week. When asked if she thought sleep impacted her social and academic life she responded, ”It does affect me educationally because I don’t think I get enough but it doesn’t affect me socially.”
Junior Isa Ciliberto said, “I usually get 7 or 8 hours of sleep on school nights and 6 hours of sleep on weekend nights. The amount of sleep I get each night usually affects my social batter and academic success. If I don’t get a lot of sleep I can tend to fall asleep in classes or just feel exhausted throughout the day.”
These students mostly believe that their sleeping patterns do have a prominent effect on their life. The majority of high school students don’t get the average amount of sleep they need per night which is 8-10 hours. This takes a toll on their social life, school, and their emotional well being. Getting more sleep is the key to success.
