Another October begins, and with it, Halloween costumes become at the forefront of many students’ minds. Some people choose to make their own, while others buy them online and at the ever-popular Spirit Halloween. Here are some CHS student’s ideas of varying simplicity that might give you some inspiration!
Esme, the head costume designer at CHS’s theater program, is putting her legendary sewing skills to work in making a Buffy the Vampire Slayer ensemble inspired by fan-favorite historical vamp Drusilla. When asked about her process, she said:
“I went to Scrappy Elephant and looked around for white fabric for a sheer white Regency style dress like she wears.I found all of the white fabrics I could there, which I got 5 yards of. I’m mixing together all of the white fabrics I could find and I’m gonna pattern it this weekend and sew them together, then I need to order a wig and fangs from Amazon.
I, personally, am crafting an elven ensemble inspired by the famed Lord of the Rings lady of the woods, Galadriel. First, I bought a base dress from Spirit Halloween, which I then sewed embellishments onto (yes, it took forever). After that, I embarked on creating a circlet worthy of elven royalty, weaving celtic knots into the headdress for maximum fantasy factor.
Simplistic costumes seem to be all the rage at CHS, with junior Charlie Petres D.I.Ying her Maxxine costume. “I’ll probably see if I can thrift for some overalls and a red bra, and then I should be good”, she said. Other students polled took similar approaches, with so-called “closet cosplays” being sourced from local thrift stores like Uptown Cheapskate and Plato’s Closet. Some standouts of this category were the Plastics from Mean Girls, the Cheshire Cat, and Eleven from Stranger Things.
Amidst the current tense social climate, some students have started to care less about the holiday this year, with Camilla Guzman saying, “Lowkey, I don’t celebrate Halloween. I haven’t dressed up for it in years.” These students might prefer to spend the Friday night catching up on homework or hanging out with friends- and who can blame them? Especially for upperclassmen, the end of the quarter is a stressful time.
Others are buying their costumes from Amazon or from party stores like Party City and Spirit Halloween, which has made its yearly reappearance in Charlottesville, located on 590 Pantops Central. People tend to be going for characters based on popular movies this year, with several common costumes being Superman, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, and Harry Potter characters. As always, group costumes are perennial party favorites, with the Powerpuff Girls, The Things from Cat in the Hat, and Percy Jackson and Annabeth being common choices.
Whether you choose to nerd out or go cutesy with your costume- or just to not wear one at all, KTR wishes you a wonderful, sugar-filled holiday. Happy Halloween!
