Is it unfair that high school teams do not have certain sports teams for girls and boys?
Imagine finding a sport you actually enjoy and working hard to get better at it, being excited to try out for your school team, only to realize that they don’t have a school team for your sport because of your gender.
It’s unfair how high schools don’t have certain sports teams for girls and boys. A person’s interest in a sport can be really passionate, and getting that passion taken away would be really disappointing. It would feel like they are not being allowed to explore this sport and are being held back.
Sports are not only fun, but can also be a source of exercise for someone, and if they are only interested in that sport, then they lose that source of exercise. I’m sure there are clubs for those sports, since they are sports that don’t let girls and boys try out, it seems to be less popular among the people, which leads to fewer outside of school clubs.
Since school teams don’t have some sports for both genders, they tend to be less popular with the people. Outside of school, sports clubs are reducing because the popularity is becoming low and can ruin people’s only way of playing that sport, and when people think of that sport, they only think of one gender. It makes them have fewer opportunities to have fun and explore something they have always enjoyed watching and playing.
I interviewed two CHS students, who wanted to express their opinion on this issue and what they are dealing with right now as students who play boys club volleyball.
“I think high schools not having sports teams for boys and girls can take some people down and get their hopes up. If they played a certain sport outside of school and were hoping the school would provide a platform for them to continue playing that sport. We both play volleyball, and the school does not provide a boys’ volleyball team, so we only get to go to the girls’ conditioning if we want to play at school. I’m upset that I can’t experience volleyball here at CHS.” said Will Jones
“I think it is quite disappointing and it’s kinda unfair that not everyone gets to enjoy the same sport. Especially if only one gender gets to play and the other one doesn’t. I think all sports should have teams for all genders, whether that be a club or a team. I think it is very important that everyone should have equal opportunities.” said Tommy Nguyen.
I think this shows how students feel, and how it’s unfair that not everyone gets the same opportunities. This highlights the unfairness of schools and the feelings of students who participate in a sport that doesn’t allow them to try out. It shows a little bit of how the school could change some things and how everyone should be able to enjoy the same sports together. Sports are very important, especially in high school, because they can help someone’s future career, on the path to college, such as scholarships, improved mental health, and maintaining a healthy body. And students don’t get access to some of those things if the sports they play are not provided or supported by the school. Schools should have sports teams for everyone and give students the same opportunities.
