In past years, Colorguard has been a hidden gem of CHS. Colorguard is a team of CHS students with choreographed routines that incorporate props like flags and mock rifles. Colorguard performs in the Marching Knights (marching band) during the fall and competes in competitions throughout the year. The Colorguard starts during August at a “camp” before school starts where they spend most of the day at school learning their routine and practicing. The guard even continues morning practices during the fall season along with the band. In the winter and part of the spring season, they do Winter Guard, which is just Colorguard without the band, and continue to compete in competitions.
This year, our guard is filled with people twirling flags but also rifles. The rifle team performs with the flag team and choreographs together for their routine. This year we have a new coach, Ms. Prater who teaches English. This is Ms. Prater’s first year teaching and coaching Colorguard. The team has a high level of appreciation for Coach Prater and are looking forward to working with her more. “She’s great and shows up, which is great.” says rifle thrower Anna Ryall.
The team has an upcoming competition on March 8th and are hoping to place well. Colorguard competes in competitions all season long, including big competitions with teams from other states. Colorguard doesn’t have a state championship or a big final competition. In past years they would compete in something similar to what would resemble a championship, but they will not be competing this year.
Colorguard is also always looking for new recruits and people who are interested. Joining late won’t guarantee you to be able to compete early on but there is always a space on the team for you. The team is very welcoming and kind, while I was visiting their practice they even offered to teach me how to spin a flag and throw a rifle. As the season progresses, we excitedly await what the team has to show and are excited to see what they can do next football season!
