At Charlottesville High School, Mr. Daly is more than just an Economics teacher—he is an integral part in both the classroom and on the basketball court. With 24 years of teaching experience under his belt, he’s become a familiar face and a beloved member of our school community. Though he didn’t originally study economics in college, his interest in the subject grew over time. “I was really interested in learning more about Economics myself,” he says. He loves how Economics reaches every student at CHS, creating “a broad cross-section of CHS in the room together, which does not happen in every class.”
Before becoming a teacher, Mr. Daly actually thought he was going to become a lawyer. But after discovering his love for teaching, he decided to take a different path. “I had great teachers growing up, which was helpful,” he shares. His journey in education started in 1999, and he’s never looked back. He finds joy in interacting with his students and says, “I’ve had a lot of fun and I have learned a lot [during his time at CHS].”
Outside the classroom, Mr. Daly has made a big impact on the CHS basketball program. With an impressive career for himself, Daly played in high school and later became the manager for the University of Richmond men’s basketball team. His coaching career at Charlottesville High School began as an assistant coach for the boys’ team before he took over as head coach for the girls’ team in 2011.
“I’ve enjoyed it a lot, we’ve had great kids in the program for the last 15 years,” he says with a smile. On the court, his favorite memories have been making the state tournament multiple times. But off the court, he says,
“What has really stuck with me was the emotional scenes of last year with a packed house full of students,” he recalls. “It honestly felt like a lot of people were invested and had a lot of fun.”
Whether in the classroom or on the court, his dedication to students and the school shines through. Mr. Daly has made a lasting impact on the Black Knight community, and we’re lucky to have him here at Charlottesville High School.
