CHS film club is back this year!

What even is film club? Well, film club is a club at CHS where students get together to make short films. Noted by one co-president, Will Jones, “In film club we teach people how to make films, we make films, we don’t watch films.” Film club is run by 3 co-presidents, Cate Slaughter, Ginger Craghead-Way, and Will Jones. All 3 presidents are juniors and have done film club every year they’ve been at CHS. They are all new to being presidents this year but their goal is to be able to run the club as well as the previous presidents did and keep the winning streak going.

Film Club makes various movies, with a varying range of time, they can span from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. The most common films they make are PSA’s (Public Service Announcement) which are usually about 30-90 seconds long. The goal of these films is to express your creativity and what you are passionate about. Co-President Cate Slaughter says, “I think film club is a place where people can come together and express creativity and I think film is something that CHS doesn’t really offer as a course or anything like that, so we are able to all come together and do a hobby that we enjoy and it’s also really rewarding.” Co-President Ginger says, ““We make films, we eat snacks, we have fun, we do a lot of funny icebreakers, we do mess around a lot but we really have fun and we get the work done.”

Film Club is also no stranger to being champions, “We make films and submit them to film festivals-” Cate notes, “And we win!”, Will interjects. Last year, Film club won best PSA in the state, along with winning best Documentary in the state in 2022. In 2023 they won audience choice in the PSA. Film club also often joins festivals where they enter their films and also win in those competitions. Their trophies are scattered around the school, make sure to look out for them!

So, how can you get involved or support film club? Well, you can join film club, they meet in Mr. Newberry’s room on Tuesday’s from 4-5pm; Film club accepts people all year round too.
