Graduation: it’s what we all look forward to. Teachers and counselors often tell us we need to pass a certain amount of classes, exams, and SOLs to graduate on time. But what are those requirements, and what else do you need besides class credits and test scores? If you’re wondering, it’s all here in this article.
Broadly, there are two different diploma types: advanced and standard. The advanced diploma requires four years of English, math, history, and science. The world language requirement is either two years each of two separate languages, or three years of one language. The advanced diploma also requires one fine arts or career & technical education (CTE) credit. Overall, the advanced diploma represents twenty-six class credits and five verified credits, which are passing grades on the SOLs.
The standard diploma has slightly fewer requirements than the advanced diploma. To earn the standard, you need to pass three years of math, history, and science, as well as four years of English. The standard has no world language requirement. The total number of credits required for the standard is twenty-two, with five verified credits.
Both diplomas require 2 years of health & PE as well as one year of economics and personal finance.
Beyond the classes you take, you are required to have all of your graduation materials such as a cap and gown. CHS uses a company called Herff Jones to buy all of the CHS swag, cap & gowns, tassels, and all others. A representative from Herff Jones comes periodically throughout the year to take orders; however, you can also order your things on their website at herffjones.com.
Graduation is an event looked forward to every year. It is a major milestone in one’s life so it’s a massive achievement to walk across the stage. Caps off to another great year! Go, Black Knights!
