Charlottesville High School is embracing a new chapter in its football program with the appointment of Terrell Mulford as head coach of the Black Knights. A former standout player at the school from 1997 to 2000, Mulford returns to lead the team after serving as the offensive coordinator for 12 years and the junior varsity coach for five. Since stepping into his new role in June, Mulford has led the Black Knights through four games, drawing on his deep understanding of the program and its values.
As a player, Mulford made his mark as the All-time leading rusher and touchdown scorer, showcasing his talent as a running back. His success on the field has translated into his coaching philosophy, which emphasizes skill development and enjoyment of the game. “My goal this year is simple: to have fun playing the game of football,” Mulford says. “I want the players to enjoy every moment while being consistent with everything they do, day in and day out.”
Under Mulford’s leadership, every player has the opportunity to take the spotlight. When asked about standout players, Mulford confidently states, “Any player on the field is a standout player.” This inclusive mindset encourages all players to step up and contribute to the team.
The support from the student section has also been a key factor in boosting team morale. “The student section plays a huge part in our games,” Mulford emphasizes. “The players want to put on a show for [the student section], and their energy provides a lot of motivation and confidence.” Mulford hopes that the student section will continue to show their amazing support, as it will enhance the game-day experience for his football team
As the season continues, Mulford is committed to instilling a strong work ethic and a sense of community within his team. With the combination of his coaching experience, deep roots in the program, and a clear focus on enjoyment and consistency, Terrell Mulford is poised to lead the Black Knights toward a successful second half of the season.
