The Charlottesville Art Department alongside UVA Neurology is launching their exhibition titled “Art in the Microscopicworld”. The show will run from Friday, March 22, 2024, until Sunday, March 31, 2024, at the Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative (306 Main Street), and is completely free of charge.
The exhibition celebrates the amazing way art can bring to life all the unseen aspects of the brain.
Art in the Microscopicworld will be kicked off with a reception this Friday (March 22) from 6 to 9 pm. This event will have food, refreshments, science demonstrations, and, of course, art created by our very own CHS students.
This event originated two years ago when Jennifer Kett, a Charlottesville High School art teacher, reconnected with a previous art student, Sarah Hunter-Chang, a current Neurology Ph.D. student at the University of Virginia(UVA). Hunter-Chang reached out to see if CHS Art could create some pieces for Brain Awareness Month.
Over the course of the past two years, over 20 different Ph.D. students from the UVA Neurology department have come into CHS art classes to teach about how the brain works and show off their current research.
Charlottesville High School art students have even had the opportunity to tour the Neurology Labs to see how research is conducted. Kett described the importance of this trip
saying, ” I feel like we as humans learn best by experiencing and seeing things outside of our building and this opened students up to possible new experiences for learning when finished with high school.”
Once returning to school after the trip, the students were asked to create art inspired by the research they had seen to later be shown in the exhibition. They were allowed to use any materials they wanted as well as choose the size of the piece. However, they were pushed to think outside the box while making their project.
Please come join the CHS art department and UVA Neurology on Friday for the celebration of Art in the Microscopicworld, as well as student art, in their new exhibition. If you cannot make it for the reception, the show will remain open until March 31, 2024.
