A horoscope is a chart of the heavens that shows the relative positions of the sun, planets, the moon, and the ascendant and midheaven signs of the zodiac at a specific time. Many people know about the twelve zodiac signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. But, there’s more.
Did you know there have been an additional two signs of Ophiuchus and Cetus to horoscope charts? Steven Schmit first proposed the idea of the addition in 1970 in Astrology 14, Your New Sun Sign. This was later validated by Nasa. Both interact very few times with the Earth’s orbit but their inclusion in horoscope charts will affect the distribution, elements, and dates of the other signs.
Ophiuchus is located between Scorpio and Sagittarius, and it dates back to Greek mythology in relation to Apollo’s son, Asclepius, a physician with gifts of healing. Cetus is represented by a sea monster that, according to Greek mythology, Perseus killed when Andromeda was about to feed him, located between Aries and Pisces. KTR interviewed a group of students to see if they knew about the new constellations in the stars.
“I did not know that there were new horoscopes added. I can’t comment on these changes because I know nothing about them. I don’t think we need to change any horoscope dates or anything. There could be additional horoscopes added in the future” said Lena Oppenheimer, a freshman at CHS.
“I also don’t know much about the new horoscopes. Changing our current zodiac sign would be too confusing. I think this should only apply to people born in 2044, they can deal with the change. Plus, if we just change theirs from a young age, they would get more used to it than us now. Things change every year, so it wouldn’t be surprising if a new zodiac came out in the future” says Zohra Mohammad Amun, a senior at CHS.
“I think it makes sense to change the zodiac signs if the earth’s axis has shifted since the original zodiacs were made so that the signs correspond to the correct constellations. Since more were added based on the earth shifting, I would say yes there could be more added, but probably not in the immediate future” says Rose Brennan-Wilkinson, a freshman at CHS.
So, the newest additions to the sky have been very unknown since they appeared. Hopefully, at a later date, people may know more about the mysteries of the sky. The universe is not stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine.
