CHS students expressed that “The Barbie Movie was far more thoughtful and meaningful than I expected.”

However, The Barbie Movie has shifted Barbie’s focus from superficial beauty to inner strength and resilience. Women all over the country reacted to the Barbie Movie in similar ways. A female student at CHS says “I cried because of the weight of what it means to be a woman. It is a set of definitions that follow us everywhere. We are not viewed as an individual first, a privilege only afforded to men. I can’t just be a student. I am a ‘woman in stem’ or I am ‘so smart for a girl’. I will always be judged for who I chose to be because I am also a woman.” This realization is what made the Barbie Movie more hard-hitting than light-hearted.
The movie emphasized the value of friendship, teamwork, and collaboration among women. They encourage girls to support one another, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity among female characters. This aspect promotes the idea that women can bond together to defeat the factors holding them back. This concept of women banding together also brought a reaction to other genders. A male student at CHS says “I think it was just about letting girls know they could do whatever, but also making sure they’re not pressured to always force themselves to be extraordinary all of the time.” The Barbie Movie values the theme that women can be who they are without needing to conform to anyone’s rules or expectations.
