CHS’s volleyball team has started the 2023-2024 season strong with two wins and lots of student attendance. This team has recently acquired a new head coach, Ryan Bobko, who “looks forward to practice every day.” He is extremely enthusiastic about taking on this position and let’s welcome him to CHS by learning more about him.
Coach Bobko grew up in North Carolina, he shared an interest in Volleyball throughout his childhood but says, “Growing up in North Carolina, you could either play baseball or football.” He ran track and field for quite some time in High School, but he only began playing volleyball when he met his wife after moving to Los Angeles. His wife was a collegiate volleyball player and they would play together on Huntington Beach.
In 2005, Bobko’s coaching journey began here in Charlottesville, Virginia, as an assistant coach for a local club team. He has been coaching ever since and has even started a boy’s program with the club within the past few years.
Why was CHS the right fit for Coach Bobko? Well, he lives in the Charlottesville city school district and has a son in the ninth grade who attends CHS. If he were to coach at another school he would have a longer drive and would be farther away from family for a longer amount of time.
The only Freshman on our CHS Varsity Volleyball team, Halsey Wilcox, says her favorite thing about Coach Bobko is that “he makes practices and games fun while also making sure we are playing our best volleyball.” He is also described as understanding and approachable to ask for help. Bobko has a large amount of trust in his team and isn’t afraid to try new things with them.
We are so excited to have Ryan Bobko join this Black Knight community and good luck to our girls throughout this fall season!
