The CHS Volleyball team, coming off a tough 2022-2023 season, is looking to bounce back with a new coach and 5 returning seniors. Frances Reynolds, senior libero, said the team needs to “find consistency after three 3-0 sweeps and three 0-3 losses”. After coming off a strong 3-1 victory at home vs Goochland, Ellen Lynch, senior outside hitter and captain, stated that the team needs to “get out of [their] ruts” and stay focused if they want to continue their success. The team has had to adapt this year after welcoming new coach Ryan Bobko. Having a first year head coach can be hard but Bobko brings a different type of coaching style by “leading without harshness,” Reynolds adds. This showed as CHS comfortably won their first game in a 3-0 victory vs Tandem Friends.
Throughout the season they have faced adversity as well after tough losses to Staunton, STAB and Fluvanna, but have bounced back each time beating teams like Culpeper and Goochland. This team has great chemistry and is persistent, Lynch adds that the team strives when “everyone is gelling” and it shows. The back half of the season proves tough with games vs Albemarle, Western, and Monticello. Reynolds said that the team is looking forward to playing Monticello and Albemarle, as it’s been a goal of theirs to beat them. That goal was partially realized on September 19th when they stomped the ‘Stangs in a gritty 3-2 battle on the road.
This team is fun to watch and are gaining confidence each day. Their competitiveness shows on the court after each point they win and each ball they dig. This team is older with more experience than they’ve had in past years and have the talent to make a run. You can catch them back on the home court on Tuesday September 26th as they face Albemarle.
