Paths to Academic Success at CHS
March 27, 2023
Did you know that at least one student in C.H.S.’s 2022 class got into every ivy league? Or that C.H.S. is ranked as the 31st best public high school in the state according to Niche? C.H.S. is an incredibly challenging and supportive school that can be a gateway into whatever you choose to pursue after highschool, whether it be a four year college or going straight into the workforce.
C.H.S. is one of the most successful academic schools in the state. With an average SAT score 1230 and average ACT score of 28 they’re far above the national average. They also have one of the highest graduation rates in the nation with a rate of 96.4 in 2021. C.H.S. offers a multitude of college courses including many Dual Enrollment classes through PVCC and loads of AP classes. This allows for a rigorous course load and challenging environment that many graduates attribute to success after highschool.
Apart from the various courses offered at C.H.S. there’s tons of extracurricular opportunities to choose from. Lucas Fuller, a 2022 graduate of C.H.S., says this, “Certain clubs, such as the Buford Stem Equity Initiative, gave me a platform to lead and create meaningful change in the Charlottesville school system.” There are also many clubs such as BACON that are funded and supported by the school which provide opportunities for success at the next level. In addition to clubs, C.H.S. also provides its students with lots of internship connections. Pietro Ciliberto, A junior at C.H.S., says this, “We have a lot of clubs and sports teams, and teachers are open and willing to sponsor clubs. CHS helped me find two internship/volunteer programs that I’m really grateful for.”
Part of the reason C.H.S. students have achieved success is due to the great counselors and other outlets CHS has. Lucas Fuller, who received the Posse scholarship at UVA, attributes part of this achievement to CHS school counselors: “I am a scholarship recipient now at UVA, and would not have known of this opportunity if it wasn’t for my counselor at CHS. They made me fully aware of the opportunity and helped coach me through the application process to receive my scholarship.” Audrey Ragsdale, a 2022 graduate, also more specifically highlights Ms. Kalea, CHS college counselor: “My counselor helped me with the more technical side of applications, and Ms. Kalea helped a lot with my essay. CHS definitely had resources that helped my college application process.” All counselors at C.H.S. are great outlets for any questions regarding either highschool or college.
Through C.H.S., there are many opportunities for success both in and after high school through the extensive list of classes offered, clubs, and internships. Lucas Fuller embodies this when he says, “CHS offered avenues for success, but it truly came down to oneself to take advantage of those things. I never felt my teachers urged me to join any specific clubs, or apply to any specific internships, but they made me perfectly aware of the opportunities I had.”
