Marisol Rodriguez, Toby Covert, and Jake Poe

Football
Key Returns: Sabias Folley, Tre Durrett, Rakeem Davis, Larry Henderson, Trejon Bryant, Sam Neale
Key Losses: Sadarius Folley, Lorenzo Louderback
Key Additions: Joe Von Storch, Sayveon Anderson, Isaiah Washington, Natavious Wingfield, Marcus Targonski
This season we’re looking at a team more united than ever. “We’re vibing different, we’re more of a family than we were last year’,” says senior Tre Durrett. “We’ve been playing together since JV.” With the return of multiple dynamic players, the team has only had to make minor adjustments and focuses more on strengthening their gameplay. In 2016, Charlottesville football showed a whole new side of themselves with wins against both Monticello and Western. Last year was also the Knights first playoff win since 1999. This season they are working to be even better and look to go much deeper in the playoffs this season.

Golf
Key Returns: Zack Russell, AJ Stouffer, Beau LeBlond
Key Losses: Patrick Ronayne, Hugh Jackson, Thomas Inigo
Key Additions: Eli Evans
For the past couple years, C.H.S. golf has been on a steady rise, each year inching closer and closer to states. This season the team is made up almost entirely of returns. “Golf is all about figuring how to make the best out of bad situations,” says senior AJ Stouffer. Not only is the team full of returns, these returns have improved tremendously and are now taking up bigger and more important roles coming into this year. The team is losing a key part of last years success in Hugh Jackson, as Jackson was a starter for the team and contributed exceptionally for the team in match play. The best part of this year’s squad is the return of AJ Stouffer and Zack Russell. They both have been dominating since freshman year: in 2015 Russell was named District Player of the Year (POTY), and in 2016 Stouffer dethroned Russell for POTY. Of course, you couldn’t contribute the team’s many years of success without mentioning Coach O’Grady, who has led the team to countless amounts of match wins.

Cross Country
Key Returns: Isaac Vic, Jamie Nachbar, Annalou Bernstein
Key Losses: Patrick O’Shea, Hollis Ledlow, Townes Josey
Key Additions: Ian Clickner
After a long string of disappointing seasons, junior Isaac Vic with help from senior Jamie Nachbar hope to breeze past regionals and have their eyes set on running in the States meet. Isaac has been on the team for five years now and has seen the best and the worst of Charlottesville Cross Country. Vic says sees potential in the squad this year, as long as the work is put in.

Volleyball
Key Returns: AnnMarie Barfield, Abby Faust, Kennedy Wardlaw
Key Losses: Grace Tanner, Susannah Schock
Key Additions: Kaitlyn Lehnert
With two substantial losses, there is a lot riding on the current and rising Varsity players. The team veterans senior AnnMarie Barfield and junior Abby Faust, have had to step up to fill the leadership roles left by Grace Tanner and Susannah Schock who graduated last year. New players such as Kaitlyn Lehnert have had to work hard to prove that they belong on the team. One thing the team has going for them is a real feeling of teamwork: a lot of the players have been working together for a couple years and are excited to face their rival Monticello.

Field Hockey
Key Returns: Ashley Clark, Milli Schlegel, Marina Reilly, Ashlyn Cherrix
Key Losses: Becca Sutphin, Anna Kendrick, Helen Atkins, Char Tomlinson, Elizabeth Kromkowski
Key Additions: Maya Block, Annika Antholis

Last year, the field hockey team had a lot of skill but lacked the confidence and team spirit it took to dominate as they had years before. This year they believe they have what it takes. With preseason giving them the chance to better their stick skills as individuals, they also used the time to grow together as a team. “It’s our spirit, we’re just so aggressive. You can feel on the field. We get the ball and that’s what matters. We know how to get it done.” says sophomore and leading scorer Maya Block. Looking to score more goals and get more wins, the team with the mantra “find your grr” has finally found it.
