Working in a Restaurant During a Pandemic

The rules that have been put into place for restaurants make it even harder to keep a restaurant running. There have been many changes to how we have to do things at Bizou. The owner created The Lot behind the restaurant because it is too small inside to seat all the people that are coming in. The Lot is a huge tent behind the restaurant with picnic tables under the tent. It was a very smart idea, so Bizou would still be allowed to serve through quarantine.

You can order from Bizou, Luce (which is our pasta and pizza), and The Lot. That is the new menu we have which just has some American food like burgers and a chicken sandwich. Bizou created a way to order so we can maintain contactless delivery. It uses a QR code that takes you right to our site to order food by your table number. Now the servers have to explain this to every single person that comes in, but even when we go through all of the instructions a lot of people still do not put their table number where they are supposed to. It can be a bit confusing but the first thing it asks you to do, once you get to the website, is putting your table number in.

It is frustrating because then once the order prints out inside, they have to ask us over the walkies where a certain last name is sitting. Outside the servers write all last names down in case someone doesn’t put their table number. That is definitely annoying to do but I think we have all gotten that part down to a science. The front patio was also opened, and up there you don’t have to order online. Someone takes your order as a normal restaurant. I work out there mostly and take your order and bring it right out to you. It is still only plastic forks and knives for COVID, but it still gives you the aspect of being at a normal restaurant. With the cold weather we have been having, we bought some heaters for the front and back.

To be completely honest we only have two heaters in the back and they are only on one side, so I am not sure how well they heat the whole tent. With temperatures dropping we are now changing our days that we are open because we aren’t getting enough business. Slowly many other restaurants are also losing business because of the cold weather. Hopefully, the winter season will be over soon and more business will come next year.
