Kai Oishi Spotlight

In recent years, the Charlottesville High School baseball team has struggled to find their groove playing against Central Virginia teams. This has not stopped Sophomore Kai Oishi from making an impact on the team, though.

Despite being a Sophomore, Oishi plays numerous positions for the Black Knights. Whether it be at shortstop, second base, third base, or pitcher, his impact is going to be felt somewhere on the field. Oishi particularly shines on the mound, where he is currently pitching a team best ERA at 2.8 with 15 innings pitched, all while only allowing opposing batters to hit .215 off of him. According to head coach Eric Lane, though, the all around player’s impact ranges far from just statistics; “Kai works hard, cares about his teammates and helps his teammates out.  He very much wants the team to succeed.” This hard working mentality has helped the team improve despite their struggles.

Oishi does not stop with his pitching and fielding, though. Offensively, he has 4 stolen bases, scored 5 runs, has 2 RBI’s, and has an on base percentage of .393 on the year. His success can possibly be pointed towards his hard work on the offseason, particularly playing for his travel baseball team, Baseball Company. As Oishi continues this hard work, and continues to grow with age, look out for not only him to improve, but for the team to improve along with his contribution.
