Last year was an indicator of the massive improvement to come for the girl’s lacrosse program. In the past the program has struggled to find momentum but this year the organization is feeling optimistic with the return and addition of numerous skilled key players. This return of familiar faces brings a sense of relief to the team which is reflected on the field. “We are comfortable making mistakes and learning from them,” said senior Ashley Clark. While there are hopes of putting up a couple more wins on their record, the team is focusing on increasing intensity and team flow.

After finishing third in the district last year, losing to only Albemarle and Western, girls soccer is strapping up for a strong return. “Last year was kind of a roller coaster ride, we had some really good moments and some moments of disconnect. When we worked together we played very good soccer, but then we had the days where we all were exhausted and external factors made it hard to put all of our focus into the game,” said senior Zoe Weatherford. The team is searching for new energy within this newer, younger team composed of mainly underclassmen. While these younger players might not have the same experience of the veteran players, the excitement to work and play hard can be felt in everyone. “The key to our success will be our positivity, energy, enthusiasm and willingness to put in the work to become a team,” stated Coach Marcelle. Placing the same level of intensity into practices and keeping focus throughout games is how the team hopes to improve skills individually and all together.

Under the coaching of Mr. Hart, the girls tennis found the ideal balance between hard work and fun times. They finished 5-4 in the regular season and made it to district semi-finals. The team has high hopes for this year despite losing six players including Sophie Dukes and Ruth Lunsford, both of which the single/doubles tournament. Their focus this year is on the fundamentals of building a better foundation through preparation, consistency, and perseverance. Success for them is measured in terms of how much fun and support they have out on the court.

Track

Key Returns: Kennedy Wardlock, Anna Lou Bernstein

Key Losses: Noella Luendo, Georgia Crum

Key Additions: Susannah Birle

Coached By: Ron Green

The track team has been working hard to rebuild the same dynamic group they had back in the spring of 2015. While track is largely an individual game in which everyone does their own event, the members have done lots of work to show their capabilities to their coach and the team. They continue to work hard to put up the same numbers as years past. Through constant new recruitments and forming more intense workouts the crew looks to mentally and physically build up to top level performance. Another goal is to grow not only in strengths but also in numbers for the chance to form a relay team. Kennedy Wardlock, senior, who made it to state in the triple jump, wants success all around and win a title.
