Why the LGBTQ+ Community Needs Pride
January 31, 2018
Pride has been an important part of LGBTQ+ culture for decades. Pride month is set in June specifically to honor the anniversary of the infamous Stonewall riots, which were held in 1969 in protest of unfair treatment of the LGBTQ+ community. The LGBTQ+ community has fought for the freedom to love whomever we want, and it wasn’t an easy fight. In many parts of the world, members of the LGBTQ+ community are killed, imprisoned, raped, attacked, and tortured because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Pride is where members of the community can be themselves without people there to belittle them or put them down. So why do some people insist that there needs to be a straight pride day? Sorry, but that’s every day. I know people who’ve been kicked out of their house for coming out to their parents. I know people who have been threatened and abused because of their sexuality. I have never met anyone who’s experienced any sort of discrimination for being straight. I’ve been to countries where I could be imprisoned for my sexuality, yet people have the audacity to say that straight people should get a pride day during our pride month? Saying things like that just contributes to the marginalization of the LGBTQ+ community. I’ve never heard of anyone refusing to bake a wedding cake for a couple because they’re straight, nor have I ever heard anything about doctors refusing to care for children because they have straight parents. On June 12th, 2016, a man shot up a nightclub, killing 49 people and committing an egregious crime against the Latino LGBTQ+ community. That day, the world seemed to band together, tweeting their prayers and donating blood (if they weren’t deferred because of their sexuality). However, every year without fail, #HeterosexualPrideDay will start trending during LGBTQ+ pride month. If people start getting attacked, imprisoned, fired from their jobs, or shot for being straight, then sure, we can have a straight pride day. Until then, know when your input isn’t needed.
