National Honors Society Induction Ceremony

It’s that time of the year again! National Honor Society hosted their annual induction ceremony on January 11th at 6:30 pm. Students and their families joined Mr. Bullock, and a hand full of current NHS members to induct new juniors and seniors into the society. This program is one of the biggest awards a student can receive at Charlottesville High School. Students are chosen based on the applications they send in which include their past and current volunteer work experiences. Students are also required to maintain a 3.0 GPA to maintain a decent academic standing. Just last year, the N.H.S. completed over 1,900 hours with community service.

At the ceremony, Susan Parmar from the International Neighbors organization delivered an emotional and inspiring speech to the new inductees of N.H.S. speaking to the importance of community. Last year, Harriet Kuhr, director of the International Rescue Committee of Charlottesville delivered the speech and each year. The two women made it clear to the students as to why they were there and how wonderful of an achievement it was to have been accepted into the society.

Parents and friends joined their N.H.S. inductee(s) and sat on the left side of the room, while the inductees sat on the right. After a few speeches and the candle lighting ceremony, wonderful drinks and snacks were offered for everyone there. It was a very pleasant experience, and I must say it was interesting seeing these students go through this, being that I was in their shoes last year.

A student can never contribute too much to the community. The main goal of the society is to make a difference by merely lending a helping hand. Congratulations to this years’ new inductees!
