C.H.S. in Need of a New Track

Susannah Birle, Staff Writer

The C.H.S. track team has the most state titles out of all the athletic teams at C.H.S, yet the worst facilities. The track at C.H.S. is —– years old and has been worn down so thin in some places that running spikes no longer puncture the track as they’re supposed to. Spikes are essential to any successful runner and cut off a significant amount of time off of your records. Practicing with spikes is critical to learning how to perfect your start, arguably the most important aspect of many races. In addition, the track team is at a disadvantage as all of our track meets are away during both our indoor and outdoor season.

The school board has discussed building a new track for years, and the state of the track is only deteriorating more with every year that passes. Coach Redd, the athletic director at C.H.S., has been talking about building a new track ever since he was hired last year. He  says that there is no new information about the track as of right now, and that the school is still waiting for a bid from a construction company to be accepted.

Longtime track coach and Greenbrier Elementary school P.E. teacher Ron Green says he won’t retire until he sees a new track put down. Green has coached countless athletes throughout the years, even some of his current and past athletes’ parents. Anyone you ask is quick to say that Coach Green has made a major impact on the Charlottesville community on and off the track, and deserves to see a new track before his time at C.H.S. is up.
