Covid and Sports

With school beginning(virtually), students at CHS have begun to think about sports again. This brings a lot of excitement but also some concern. There are still questions about how sports will run and keep student-athletes, their families, and the Black Knight community safe. While the VHSL has a plan to start out-of-season practices on November 6th, Charlottesville High School has yet to approve this decision or propose any other details about how it will work. Under the VHSL plan, all three seasons of sports will be played in a condensed manner, with the order being winter, fall, spring, instead of the typical fall, winter, spring sports schedule. Many Senior athletes, including myself, have many different opinions on CHS’s plan with sports. Senior, Lamont Bullard of the football team said that he looks forward to sports returning and hopes out-of-season conditioning can startup. He added that he wants this to be done safely. If sports can be played in a safe manner it would certainly be something good for Black Knight Nation to cheer on, most likely from a distance. The lack of events could definitely be satisfied with the playing of sports. When I asked Senior Malcolm Brickhouse of the soccer team about how he feels and any concerns he has he stated, “As far as safety goes, I don’t think that there should be much concern. There is no evidence that youth sports have led to any transmission of the virus, especially outdoors. Many kids have already been playing for non-school teams. I hope that conditioning is allowed in November, and I hope we get to have our senior seasons.” There are obviously a lot of students hoping to play this year. Hopefully, in the coming weeks and months, a more in-depth plan is developed not only by the state but also by Charlottesville High School. Students deserve answers to how some of their favorite aspects of the school will happen. These activities are important for our school’s community and should be planned to allow for the most fun and competition while maintaining a healthy community.
