New Entrepreneurship Class At C.H.S.

Hunter Randle, Mia Bostic, Staff Writer

For all of you up and coming entrepreneurs at C.H.S., have we got a class for you! Next year there will be an Innovation & Entrepreneurship class offered, where students have the opportunity to learn what it takes to manage a start-up business. This includes planning, organization, marketing, sales, and finance. To be clear, the definition of an entrepreneur is one who operates and owns their own business. Although it has not been determined who will be teaching the class next year, Mrs. Maynard (Personal Finance and Economics Teacher) and Mr. Davis (Head of the Garden and Urban Farming Teacher) are very excited about getting this class started. They are teaming up to design what the core of this class will be.

Charlottesville is a bustling hub of business start ups so it seems only fitting that our community would create a way for C.H.S. to get involved and contribute their skills in order for the Charlottesville business community to reach its full potential. When asked what he hoped this class could accomplish for students, Mr. Davis said, “In this course, students will learn what it takes to start their own business. The course will focus on advanced strategies for entrepreneurship in the tech field or other areas. You would learn to develop a business plan and the basics of small business management by partnering with local businesses and start‐up  companies.”

Choosing to seize this opportunity to expand your potential as an entrepreneur can vastly accelerate your abilities in the workforce. If you want your career to involve anything related to business and running it successfully. A class that can be offered to you in your school day can really stick your foot in the door of better financial opportunity.

How do you think taking this class will benefit students?

Students will be able to explore multiple career interests while learning the basic skills needed to  compete as an entrepreneur. Basically, we hope to let them explore their own interests in business while learning the general basics.

Will students have opportunities to go out into the field and visit local businesses?

We are fortunate to live in a city that values entrepreneurship and we are surrounded by a wide variety of local businesses.  It would definitely be a goal to both take students out into the community as well as have local business owners come and visit with the class.
